A small shift

While I prefer to cycle outdoors, I confess that I am a fair weather outdoor cycler so I  attend indoor cycling or spinning classes every week in the Fall and Winter.

In true Feldenkrais form, I try to pay attention to how I do every activity though I admit that sometimes I am better at that than at others.

This morning I was awake enough (our class starts at 6:45 am) to pay attention to my form and position on the bike. I  noticed my sitting position and realized I was leaning backward: my stomach was curved backward, my chest was down and I was sitting behind my pelvic sitting bones.

I made a small shift forward, from my pelvis, which brought me more onto my sitting bones.  All of a sudden everthing aligned vertically – my trunk shifted over my pelvis, my chest and sternum came forward, my head was more aligned over my spine and my eyes shifted to look forward and outward rather than down to my feet.

I instantly noticed that my hip joints were more mobile and cycling became easier! Throughout the class I played with the various positions of my pelvis, trunk and eyes.

What a difference focused attention and a small shift makes! Try shifting one small component and notice how it changes how you do what you are doing.
