Back to School

School started for most students on Tuesday Sept 3; classes at the Feldenkrais Centre Vancouver® begin next Tuesday Sept 10. welcome_back_to_school_chalkboard

It was timely and very inspiring to read Tracy Sherlock’s article in today’s Vancouver Sun describing a new educational initiative being trialed this year in several BC school districts. Called “self-regulation” students are coached to understand the stressors preventing them from paying attention in class and are taught strategies to self regulate their emotions and behaviours.

More and more educators are realizing the benefits of including movement and alternate activities as part of the school day. That learning happens during movement and while paying attention to how we use our bodies is not news to Feldenkrais Method® and other movement practitioners and it is heartwarming to now see those concepts actualized in mainstream education.

What I really love are the “engine breaks”, when kids who either need to calm down or boost their energy can go climb a flight of stairs a couple of times and then are trusted to return to the classroom.

Back to school at the Feldenkrais Centre Vancouver ® is Tuesday Sept 10 at 10:30 am. Lots of classes and workshops are scheduled this fall. Check them out on our website.  Great for anyone who wants to explore how to learn through movement. Our classroom is small, intimate and warm where learning takes place in a trusting environment where the only requirement is that you take care of yourself and homework assignments are not handed in for grading!

Hope to see you all.
