Exploring balance

Finding balance requires that our visual and vestibular systems work together so that we have the ability to sense and respond to the surface under us. Balance acuity decreases as we age; losing our sense of balance is a significant cause of stumbles and falls.

Doing movements that challenge our balance is important to keep these systems going.

Explore the following:

  • Stand in front of a wall, with your hand resting lightly on the wall to give you support. If you prefer, you can stand behind a chair with your hand on the back of the chair.
  • Cross your right leg over you left at the ankle. Your right foot will be standing on the floor to the left of your left foot.
  • Take a moment to adjust so you can stand without shaking.
  • Slowly shift your pelvis right and left. Make small movements and reduce your effort. Repeat several times.
  • As you shift your pelvis breathe gently and easily. Notice where your eyes are focusing. Reduce tension in your neck and in your mouth by ensuring that your top and bottom jaws are not touching each other.
  • Continue and now lean your head and shoulders from side to side. What do you need to do to maintain your balance? Can you feel what happens in your pelvis? Reduce the size and speed of the movement.
  • Stop, uncross your legs and walk around the room for a few moments.
  • Repeat, crossing your left foot over your right.
