Pelvis power and flexibility

Centre is a word that describes our pelvis.

The pelvis is located in the centre of the body.  Second to the head, is the largest structure and the source of power for all of our movements.

The pelvis is the body’s centre of gravity. Centre of gravity, also referred to as centre of mass is defined as “a point from which the weight of a body or system may be considered to act. In uniform gravity it is the same as the centre of mass.”

A strong, moveable and alive pelvis allows us to move better, to sit more comfortably so we can do our activities with more ease and enjoy them more.

Treat your pelvis right before it grabs your attention. Many of us limit movement in our pelvis without realizing it. Or we hold the whole area tight thinking we would look silly to move it more or be thought ill of. Or we might have pelvic pain which limits our movements and enjoyment of many activities.

Try this movement tip and observe the power of your pelvis:

  • Walk a few steps keeping your pelvis still.
  • Then let your pelvis move gently from side to side  as you walk.
  • What is different about your walking when your pelvis is free? What do you sense in your lower back when your pelvis moves?
  • Pay attention to your breathing when you walk with a moveable pelvis.
  • Exaggerate the movement of your pelvis, walking with the “sashay walk” and notice how your back feels.
  • Then walk again with your pelvis unmoving and notice where else you feel restricted.
  • Return to letting your pelvis move easily. Notice the freedom of movement in your back, shoulders, neck and head and the connection through your feet to the ground.

When you walk with a freely moving pelvis your lower back is more comfortable, you have more control of your legs, you can turn more quickly and you will feel more supported by the ground. You will also demonstrate an attitude of strength and agility.

Want to learn more about the power of your pelvis?

In our next workshop we will explore the power of our pelvis and will learn how posture and balance can be improved through more awareness and movement of the pelvis and surrounding areas.
