Holiday Greetings and Winter planning

Best wishes to all for this holiday season and joy and good health in 2014. Thank you for your continued support throughout the years.

Some recent articles that have caught my attention that I would like to share.

I almost always walk the stairs rather than ride the elevator. It is a great way to build exercise into the day and it saves time as elevators are often very slow. It also helps maintain the skill because “if you don’t do it, you lose it.”  Here is the latest article extolling other benefits of walking stairs.

Of course I am always interested in the HOW of what we do including walking up stairs.

If you have difficulty going up stairs think about how you are using your back leg. Pay attention if you are peeling it off and propelling yourself up the stair or if you are pulling yourself up with the front leg. You will find the latter to be more difficult.

Going down stairs can be equally hard especially if you have any difficulties in your knees. You can go down diagonally and change directions every few stairs.

I have already talked about yoga and injuries. My approach is somewhat different. I help my students learn how each movement can be continuous and reversible rather than striving to reach a goal. Less is often more. Paying attention to how you do the action and how much of your whole body you include is more helpful than pushing through pain to get to a particular position or pose.
