Learning how to find comfort while lying on your side

If you are like most people you will fall asleep in one position and then move around throughout the night.Ā  Can you learn to be comfortable while lying on your back and your side? And even on your stomach?

Today we focus on getting comfort, and support, in side lying.

You will have to try this tip out when you go to bed or lie on the floor or carpet.

  • Lie down on your side. Which side did you spontaneously lie on?
  • Put a large enough pillow, or more than one pillow, under your head so that your head is level to your back. If your pillow is too low or too soft, your neck will hang down causing discomfort.
  • Notice if your top shoulder is stacked over your lower shoulder or is one more forward than the other? Reposition your shoulders until you feel they are stacked. Is this more comfortable?
  • How did you place your legs – bent in front or long? You might find that having your knees bent so your upper legs are almost perpendicular to your trunk and your lower legs are at right angle to your upper leg is more comfortable than lying with long legs.
  • Do you notice if your upper leg is sloping downward or is it level with your pelvis? Do you feel any tension in your lower back?
  • If your leg is sloped downward or your back feels tense, place a pillow between your legs. This will lift your leg and your pelvis and leg will be more aligned with each other. It will also take tension out of your lower back.
