I just returned from a 4 day trip to Jasper National Park in Alberta. A long way to go for only 4 days but we packed a lot in.
I had my first ever golf lesson, went on a few small hikes in Maligne Canyon and Peyto lake, took a tour of the Athabasca icefield in a vehicle that looks like a lunar module, went on a boat tour of Mailgne lake, walked around Jasper, ate, read and relaxed.
Our biggest adventure was a big hike up Whistlers Mountain which has an elevation gain of over 1000 meters (yes Whistler in Alberta) with a great pay off of an outstanding view. Through the 3 hours of climbing I kept focusing on how I was including my whole body in each step and paid particular attention to pushing myself off from the back foot, minimizing the pull forward from the front foot. This technique conserves energy and makes hiking, and all walking, easier. But to save our knees we took the tram down. Many people think down is easier but in reality going down steep inclines creates more strain and effort in the joints, particularly the knees, without any of the cardiac benefit you get from the climb up.
Jasper National Park is known for its wildlife which are viewed as you drive the Icefields Highway. We saw a black bear, elk, a moose, deer, mountain goat and big horn sheep. A group of mountain goat were on one side of the highway and a few of their friends were on the other side.
How does a mountain goat cross the highway? All traffic stops of course.
Today I am back to doing what I love second best, after being on vacation, teaching Feldenkrais classes and seeing clients.
